Sermon on
Definition of Authority

1. Understanding the Concept of Authority

1.1 Authority as Power and Right: Authority is not just about power, but also about the right to exercise that power. It is the ability to influence, command, or apply force, coupled with the right to do so. Power without the right to use it is tyranny, while the right without power is impotent. Romans 13:1-2

1.2 Authority as Delegated: Authority is not self-generated; it is delegated by a higher authority. In the Christian context, all authority comes from God and is given to individuals for specific purposes. Matthew 28:18

2. Authority in the Bible

2.1 God as the Ultimate Authority: The Bible presents God as the ultimate authority. He is the creator of the universe and everything in it, and therefore has the right to rule over it. His authority is absolute, universal, and eternal. Psalm 115:3

2.2 Jesus as the Embodiment of God's Authority: Jesus, as the Son of God, embodies God's authority on earth. He exercised authority over nature, sickness, death, and even spiritual forces. His authority was recognized by those who witnessed His miracles and teachings. Matthew 8:27

3. Authority in the Christian Life

3.1 Authority of the Believer: As believers, we are given authority in Christ. This includes the authority to overcome sin, to pray in Jesus' name, and to carry out the Great Commission. However, this authority must be exercised in submission to God and for His glory. Luke 10:19

3.2 Authority in the Church: God has established authority structures within the church. This includes the authority of church leaders, who are called to shepherd God's flock with humility and integrity. Believers are called to respect and submit to this authority, as long as it aligns with God's Word. Hebrews 13:17

4. Misuse of Authority

4.1 Authority as a Tool for Control: Authority can be misused when it is used as a tool for control or manipulation. This is contrary to the servant leadership model that Jesus demonstrated and taught. Mark 10:42-44

4.2 Rebellion Against Authority: Rebellion against legitimate authority is also a misuse of authority. This includes rebellion against God, against government authorities, and against authority within the church. Romans 13:2

5. The Right Response to Authority

5.1 Submission to Authority: The Bible calls us to submit to authority, as long as it does not contradict God's Word. This includes submission to God, to government authorities, and to church leaders. 1 Peter 2:13-15

5.2 Exercising Authority with Love and Humility: When we are in positions of authority, we are called to exercise it with love and humility, following the example of Jesus. This includes using authority to serve others, rather than to dominate or control them. Philippians 2:3-4
