Sermon on
Definition of Refuge

1. Understanding the Concept of Refuge

1.1 Refuge as a Place of Safety: The Bible often refers to God as our refuge, a place where we can find safety and protection. In times of trouble, we can run to Him for shelter. Psalm 46 1 says, "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." Psalm 46:1

1.2 Refuge as a Source of Comfort: Not only is God our refuge in terms of safety, but He is also a source of comfort. In Him, we find peace amidst the storms of life. Psalm 34 18 assures us that "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." Psalm 34:18

2. Seeking Refuge in God

2.1 Trusting in God's Protection: To seek refuge in God means to trust in His protection. We believe that He is capable of keeping us safe from harm. As Proverbs 18:10

2.2 Relying on God's Strength: Seeking refuge in God also means relying on His strength. We acknowledge our weaknesses and trust that His power is made perfect in our weakness. 2 Corinthians 12:9

3. The Assurance of God as Our Refuge

3.1 God's Unchanging Nature: The assurance of God as our refuge lies in His unchanging nature. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and His promises stand firm. Hebrews 13:8

3.2 God's Faithfulness: God's faithfulness also assures us that He is our refuge. He is faithful to His promises and will never leave us nor forsake us. Deuteronomy 31:6

4. Living as People of Refuge

4.1 Reflecting God's Protection: As people of refuge, we are called to reflect God's protection to others. We can do this by showing love, kindness, and compassion to those around us. (1 John 4 11 instructs, "Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another." (1 John 4 11) 1 John 4:11

4.2 Sharing the Hope of Refuge: We are also called to share the hope of refuge in God with others. We can do this by sharing the gospel and testifying about what God has done in our lives. 1 Peter 3:15
