Sermon on
Negative Words Can Affect Our Spiritual Health

1. The Power of Words

1.1 Understanding the impact of words: Words are not just mere sounds; they carry power. They have the ability to build up or tear down, to encourage or discourage, to heal or to wound. Proverbs 18 21 tells us that "Death and life are in the power of the tongue." Proverbs 18:21

1.2 The spiritual significance of words: In the Bible, God used words to create the universe. Jesus is referred to as the Word of God. Words are not just physical entities but have a spiritual dimension. John 1 1 says, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." John 1:1

2. The Negative Impact of Negative Words

2.1 Negative words and spiritual health: Negative words can have a detrimental impact on our spiritual health. They can lead to discouragement, doubt, and despair. They can hinder our relationship with God and with others. Proverbs 12 18 warns that "The words of the reckless pierce like swords." Proverbs 12:18

2.2 Negative words and self-perception: Negative words can also affect how we see ourselves. They can make us feel unworthy, unloved, and inadequate. This can prevent us from fully experiencing God's love and grace. Proverbs 23 7 says, "For as he thinks in his heart, so is he." Proverbs 23:7

3. The Need for Positive Words

3.1 The healing power of positive words: Positive words can have a healing effect on our spiritual health. They can bring hope, encouragement, and joy. They can strengthen our faith and draw us closer to God. Proverbs 16 24 says, "Pleasant words are as a honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones." Proverbs 16:24

3.2 The role of positive words in our spiritual growth: Positive words can also play a crucial role in our spiritual growth. They can help us to see ourselves as God sees us - loved, valued, and created in His image. They can inspire us to live out our faith with courage and conviction. Ephesians 4 29 instructs us, "Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear." Ephesians 4:29

4. Practical Steps to Overcome Negative Words

4.1 Replacing negative words with God's truth: One effective way to overcome negative words is to replace them with God's truth. We can do this by meditating on God's Word and speaking it over our lives. Philippians 4 8 encourages us to think about "whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable." Philippians 4:8

4.2 Seeking God's help in controlling our tongue: Controlling our tongue is not easy, but with God's help, it is possible. We can ask God to help us to speak words that bring life and healing. Psalm 141 3 is a prayer that we can pray "Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips." Psalm 141:3
