Sermon on
Righteousness and Society

1. Understanding Righteousness

1.1 Defining Righteousness: Righteousness is the quality of being morally right or justifiable. It is a state of moral perfection required by God to enter heaven. However, the Bible clearly states that human beings cannot achieve righteousness on their own; it is a gift from God to those who put their faith in Jesus Christ. Romans 3:22

1.2 The Source of Righteousness: Righteousness comes from God alone. It is not something we can achieve through our own efforts or good deeds. It is a gift given to us through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross. Philippians 3:9

2. The Role of Righteousness in Society

2.1 Promoting Justice and Fairness: Righteousness leads to justice and fairness in society. When individuals and institutions operate under the principles of righteousness, it results in equitable treatment for all, regardless of their social, economic, or racial background. Proverbs 21:3

2.2 Fostering Peace and Harmony: Righteousness also fosters peace and harmony in society. When people live righteously, they promote peace and goodwill among each other, leading to a harmonious and prosperous society. Isaiah 32:17

3. The Impact of Unrighteousness on Society

3.1 Social Injustice: Unrighteousness leads to social injustice. When individuals and institutions act unrighteously, it results in the oppression and marginalization of certain groups of people. Isaiah 10:1-2

3.2 Disruption of Peace: Unrighteousness also disrupts peace in society. When people live unrighteously, they create conflict and discord, leading to a chaotic and unstable society. Proverbs 29:22

4. The Call to Righteousness

4.1 Personal Righteousness: The Bible calls each of us to live righteously. This involves turning away from sin and living in accordance with God's commandments. It is a personal decision that has far-reaching implications for our lives and the society in which we live. 1 Peter 1:15-16

4.2 Corporate Righteousness: The Bible also calls for corporate righteousness. This means that institutions, whether they be governments, businesses, or churches, should operate under the principles of righteousness. This leads to justice, fairness, and peace in society. Micah 6:8

5. The Promise of Righteousness

5.1 Blessings for the Righteous: God promises blessings for those who live righteously. These blessings may not always be material in nature, but they include peace, joy, and a deep sense of fulfillment. Matthew 5:6

5.2 A Righteous Society: God's ultimate promise is a society where righteousness reigns. This is a society where justice is served, peace is maintained, and everyone is treated with dignity and respect. This is the society that God desires and the one we should strive for. Revelation 21:3-4
