1.1 Definition of Sanctification: Sanctification is the process by which God makes us holy, setting us apart for His special use and refining us to be more like Him.  1 Thessalonians 4:3

1.2 The Necessity of Sanctification: Without sanctification, we cannot see the Lord or be in His holy presence. It is an essential part of our salvation and spiritual growth.  Hebrews 12:14

2. The Process of Sanctification

2.1 Initial Sanctification: Initial sanctification happens at the moment of salvation when we are justified and declared righteous before God.  1 Corinthians 6:11

2.2 Progressive Sanctification: Progressive sanctification is the ongoing process of becoming more like Christ, as we grow in faith and obedience.  2 Corinthians 3:18

2.3 Final Sanctification: Final sanctification will occur when we see Christ face to face and are made perfect in His likeness.  John 3:2

3. The Role of the Holy Spirit in Sanctification

3.1 The Holy Spirit's Conviction: The Holy Spirit convicts us of sin and leads us to repentance, which is the first step in sanctification.  John 16:8

3.2 The Holy Spirit's Empowerment: The Holy Spirit empowers us to live a holy life and resist sin, helping us in the process of sanctification.  Galatians 5:16

3.3 The Holy Spirit's Transformation: The Holy Spirit transforms us into the image of Christ, which is the ultimate goal of sanctification.  2 Corinthians 3:18

4. Our Participation in Sanctification

4.1 Cooperation with the Holy Spirit: We must cooperate with the Holy Spirit, yielding to His leading and obeying His commands for sanctification to take place.  Philippians 2:12-13

4.2 Pursuit of Holiness: We must actively pursue holiness, striving to live a life that pleases God and reflects His character.  Hebrews 12:14

4.3 Commitment to Spiritual Growth: We must be committed to spiritual growth, continually seeking to know God more and grow in our understanding of His Word.  2 Peter 3:18

5. The Results of Sanctification

5.1 Increased Likeness to Christ: Sanctification results in an increased likeness to Christ in our thoughts, words, and actions.  Romans 8:29

5.2 Greater Fruitfulness: As we are sanctified, we bear greater fruit for God's kingdom, demonstrating the reality of our faith.  John 15:8

5.3 Assurance of Salvation: Sanctification provides assurance of salvation, as we see evidence of God's work in our lives.  2 Peter 1:10
