Sermon on
The Biblical Definition of Lowliness

1. Understanding Lowliness from a Biblical Perspective

1.1 Lowliness as Humility: Lowliness in the Bible often refers to humility, a quality highly valued by God. It is the opposite of pride and arrogance. Humility is recognizing our dependence on God and acknowledging His supremacy over our lives. Proverbs 22:4

1.2 Lowliness as Servanthood: In the Bible, lowliness is also associated with servanthood. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came not to be served but to serve others. This is the ultimate example of lowliness - putting others' needs before our own. Mark 10:45

2. Biblical Examples of Lowliness

2.1 Jesus Christ: The Ultimate Example Jesus Christ is the perfect example of lowliness. Though He was God, He made Himself nothing, taking the form of a servant. His life on earth was marked by humility and service, showing us how to live a life of lowliness. Philippians 2:5-7

2.2 The Apostle Paul: A Servant of Christ The Apostle Paul was another example of lowliness. He considered himself a servant of Christ and was willing to endure hardship and persecution for the sake of the Gospel. His life demonstrated a deep sense of lowliness and devotion to God. 1 Corinthians 4:1-2

3. The Blessings of Lowliness

3.1 God Gives Grace to the Humble: The Bible promises that God gives grace to the humble. When we live a life of lowliness, we position ourselves to receive God's grace and favor. James 4:6

3.2 Humility Leads to Honor: The Bible also teaches that humility leads to honor. When we choose the path of lowliness, God promises to lift us up in due time. Proverbs 18:12

4. Cultivating Lowliness in Our Lives

4.1 Embracing a Servant's Heart: To cultivate lowliness, we must embrace a servant's heart. This means putting others' needs before our own and seeking to serve rather than be served. It's about living a life of selflessness and service. Mark 9:35

4.2 Depending on God: Lowliness also involves depending on God rather than relying on our own strength or wisdom. It's about acknowledging our need for God and submitting to His will in all things. This is the essence of humility and lowliness. Proverbs 3:5-6
