Sermon on
The Biblical Definition of Passion

1. Understanding Passion from a Biblical Perspective

1.1 Passion as a Strong Desire: The Bible often describes passion as a strong desire or longing. This is not necessarily a negative thing. God Himself is described as having strong desires and passions. For example, He is passionate about justice and righteousness. Psalm 37:28

1.2 Passion as Zeal: Passion can also be described as zeal or fervor. This is seen in the way Jesus was passionate about His Father's house and His mission on earth. John 2:17

1.3 Passion as Love: Passion is also closely related to love in the Bible. God's love for us is described as a passionate love, and we are called to love God and others with the same passion. Deuteronomy 6:5

2. The Role of Passion in Our Spiritual Lives

2.1 Passion for God: As believers, we are called to have a passionate love for God. This means seeking Him with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. Mark 12:30

2.2 Passion for God's Word: We should also have a passion for God's Word. It should be our delight and our meditation day and night. Psalm 119:97

2.3 Passion for God's People: Our passion for God should also translate into a passion for His people. We should love and care for others with the same intensity that God loves and cares for us. 1 John 4:11

3. The Dangers of Misdirected Passion

3.1 Passion for Worldly Things: The Bible warns us about having a passion for worldly things. These passions can lead us away from God and into sin. 1 John 2:15-16

3.2 Passion without Knowledge: Passion without knowledge can also be dangerous. We need to have a correct understanding of God and His Word to ensure our passions are directed in the right way. Proverbs 19:2

3.3 Passion without Love: Even if we have a passion for God and His Word, if we do not have love, we are nothing. Love should be the driving force behind all our passions. 1 Corinthians 13:2

4. Cultivating Biblical Passion

4.1 Through Prayer: Prayer is one of the ways we can cultivate a passion for God. As we communicate with God, our love and desire for Him grows. Philippians 4:6

4.2 Through the Word: Spending time in God's Word also helps to cultivate passion. As we understand more about God and His love for us, our passion for Him increases. Psalm 119:11

4.3 Through Fellowship: Fellowship with other believers can also help to ignite our passion for God. As we share and learn from each other, our passion for God and His Word grows. Hebrews 10:24-25
