Sermon on
The Biblical Definition of Union with Christ

1. Understanding the Concept of Union with Christ

1.1 The term 'Union with Christ' refers to the relationship between a believer and Jesus Christ. This union is spiritual and transformative, leading to a new creation in Christ. 2 Corinthians 5:17

1.2 Union with Christ is not a mere concept but a reality that impacts every aspect of a believer's life. It is the foundation of our identity, our salvation, and our sanctification. Galatians 2:20

1.3 This union is initiated by God through the Holy Spirit and is maintained through faith in Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2:8-9

2. The Biblical Basis for Union with Christ

2.1 The New Testament frequently speaks of believers being 'in Christ,' 'with Christ,' or 'through Christ.' These phrases all point to the reality of our union with Him. Romans 8:1

2.2 Jesus Himself prayed for this union in His high priestly prayer, asking that His followers may be one as He and the Father are one. John 17:21

2.3 Paul's letters are filled with references to our union with Christ, emphasizing its centrality to the Christian faith. Ephesians 1:3-14

3. The Implications of Union with Christ

3.1 Union with Christ means that we share in His death and resurrection. Our old self is crucified with Him, and we are raised to new life in Him. Romans 6:4-6

3.2 Because we are united with Christ, we are also seated with Him in the heavenly realms. This speaks of our spiritual position and authority in Christ. Ephesians 2:6

3.3 Our union with Christ also means that we are partakers of His divine nature and share in His inheritance. 2 Peter 1:4

4. Living Out Our Union with Christ

4.1 Union with Christ should impact our daily lives. It calls us to live in a manner worthy of our calling, reflecting Christ in our thoughts, words, and actions. Ephesians 4:1

4.2 Our union with Christ also calls us to a life of dependence on Him. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit apart from the vine, we cannot live the Christian life apart from Christ. John 15:5

4.3 Finally, our union with Christ gives us assurance of our eternal security. Nothing can separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39
