The Call for Discernment

 

1. Understanding Discernment

1.1 Definition of Discernment: The ability to judge well. It is the ability to perceive the difference between right and wrong, truth and error, good and evil. Hebrews 5:14

1.2 Discernment as a Gift from God: God grants discernment to those who seek Him and His wisdom. It is not a natural ability, but a supernatural gift. James 1:5

1.3 The Necessity of Discernment: In a world full of deception and falsehood, discernment is essential for Christians. 1 John 4:1

2. The Source of Discernment

2.1 The Word of God: The Bible is the ultimate source of discernment. It provides clear guidance on what is right and wrong, and helps us to discern the truth. Psalm 119:105

2.2 The Holy Spirit: The Holy Spirit guides us into all truth and helps us to discern the will of God. John 16:13

2.3 Prayer: Through prayer, we can ask God for discernment and wisdom. James 1:5

3. The Practice of Discernment

3.1 Discerning Truth from Error: We must use discernment to distinguish between truth and error, especially in matters of faith and doctrine. 1 John 4:1

3.2 Discerning Good from Evil: Discernment helps us to choose what is good and reject what is evil. Romans 12:9

3.3 Discerning God's Will: Through discernment, we can understand God's will for our lives. Romans 12:2

4. The Challenges to Discernment

4.1 Deception: The world is full of deception, and without discernment, we can easily be led astray. Matthew 24:24

4.2 False Teachings: There are many false teachings that can lead us away from the truth. Discernment helps us to identify and reject these false teachings. 2 Peter 2:1

4.3 Personal Biases: Our own biases and preferences can hinder our discernment. We must be willing to submit our thoughts and desires to the truth of God's Word. Proverbs 3:5-6

5. The Blessings of Discernment

5.1 Protection: Discernment protects us from deception and false teachings. Ephesians 6:14

5.2 Wisdom: Discernment leads to wisdom and understanding. Proverbs 2:3-5

5.3 Spiritual Maturity: Discernment is a sign of spiritual maturity. It shows that we are growing in our faith and knowledge of God. Hebrews 5:14
