Sermon on
The Call to Continual Growth in Love

1. Understanding the Nature of God's Love

1.1 God's Love is Unconditional: God's love for us is not based on our performance or our worthiness. It is a free gift that He gives to us because of who He is, not because of who we are. Romans 5:8

1.2 God's Love is Sacrificial: The ultimate demonstration of God's love is seen in the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ, on the cross for our sins. John 3:16

1.3 God's Love is Everlasting: God's love for us is not temporary or conditional. It is a love that lasts forever, a love that will never let us go. Jeremiah 31:3

2. Responding to God's Love

2.1 Receiving God's Love: The first step in growing in love is to receive God's love for us. This involves accepting His forgiveness and surrendering our lives to Him. 1 John 4:19

2.2 Abiding in God's Love: To grow in love, we must remain in God's love. This means continually seeking Him, spending time in His Word, and living in obedience to His commands. John 15:9

2.3 Reflecting God's Love: As we receive and abide in God's love, we are called to reflect this love to others. This involves showing kindness, forgiveness, and compassion to those around us. Ephesians 4:32

3. The Challenges to Growing in Love

3.1 Selfishness: One of the biggest obstacles to growing in love is our own selfishness. We must learn to put the needs of others before our own. Philippians 2:3-4

3.2 Fear: Fear can also hinder our growth in love. We must learn to trust in God's perfect love, which drives out all fear. 1 John 4:18

3.3 Unforgiveness: Holding onto bitterness and unforgiveness can prevent us from fully experiencing and expressing God's love. We must learn to forgive as we have been forgiven. Colossians 3:13

4. The Fruit of Growing in Love

4.1 Deeper Relationship with God: As we grow in love, our relationship with God becomes deeper and more intimate. James 4:8

4.2 Improved Relationships with Others: Growing in love also improves our relationships with others, as we become more patient, kind, and understanding. 1 Peter 4:8

4.3 Greater Impact in the World: As we grow in love, we become more effective in our witness for Christ, as people are drawn to the love of God that they see in us. Matthew 5:16
