Sermon on
The Definition of Ends in a Biblical Context

1. Understanding the Biblical Concept of Ends

1.1 The End as a Conclusion: The Bible often uses the term 'end' to signify a conclusion or completion of a phase, period, or process. This concept is seen in the life of Jesus, whose earthly ministry concluded with His death and resurrection.  John 19:30

1.2 The End as a Goal or Purpose: In other instances, 'end' refers to a goal or purpose. This is evident in the life of Paul, who saw the proclamation of the Gospel as his ultimate aim.  Romans 10:4

2. The Eschatological Significance of Ends

2.1 The End Times: The 'end' also carries eschatological significance in the Bible, referring to the end times or the culmination of human history. This is a period marked by the second coming of Christ and the final judgement.  Matthew 24:14

2.2 The New Beginning: The 'end' is not merely a cessation, but it also signifies a new beginning. After the end times, the Bible promises a new heaven and a new earth.  Revelation 21:1

3. The Personal Implication of Ends

3.1 The End of Self: In a personal context, the 'end' can refer to the end of self, where believers are called to die to their old selves and live for Christ.  Galatians 2:20

3.2 The End of Sin's Reign: The 'end' also signifies the end of sin's reign in our lives through the redemptive work of Christ.  Romans 6:22

4. The Ultimate End: God's Glory

4.1 God's Glory as the Ultimate End: The ultimate 'end' in a Biblical context is the glory of God. Everything exists for His glory and His purposes.  Romans 11:36

4.2 Participating in God's Glory: As believers, we are called to participate in this ultimate end by living for God's glory in all we do.  1 Corinthians 10:31
