Sermon on
The Definition of Reconciliation

1. Understanding Reconciliation

1.1 The Meaning of Reconciliation: Reconciliation is a term that means to bring back into harmony or to restore a relationship that has been broken. It is about mending what has been broken and healing the wounds of the past. In the Bible, reconciliation is often used to describe the process of making peace with God through Jesus Christ. 2 Corinthians 5:18

1.2 The Need for Reconciliation: Due to our sinful nature, we are naturally at odds with God. Our sins create a barrier that separates us from Him. Therefore, we need reconciliation to restore our relationship with God and to enjoy the benefits of His love, grace, and mercy. Isaiah 59:2

2. The Basis of Reconciliation

2.1 The Work of Christ: The basis of our reconciliation with God is the work of Christ on the cross. Jesus died for our sins, paying the penalty that we deserved. His sacrifice made it possible for us to be reconciled with God. Romans 5:10

2.2 The Grace of God: God's grace is the foundation of our reconciliation. It is by His grace that we are saved and reconciled to Him. God's grace is unmerited favor, meaning we did not earn it, but He gives it freely because of His love for us. Ephesians 2:8-9

3. The Process of Reconciliation

3.1 Recognition of Sin: The first step in the process of reconciliation is recognizing our sin. We must admit that we have sinned against God and that our sin separates us from Him. 1 John 1:9

3.2 Repentance: After recognizing our sin, we must repent. Repentance means turning away from our sin and turning back to God. It is a change of heart and mind that leads to a change in behavior. Acts 3:19

3.3 Faith in Christ: The final step in the process of reconciliation is placing our faith in Christ. We must believe that Jesus died for our sins and rose again, and trust in Him alone for our salvation. John 3:16

4. The Results of Reconciliation

4.1 Peace with God: One of the results of reconciliation is peace with God. We are no longer at odds with Him, but are in a right relationship with Him. This peace surpasses all understanding and guards our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7

4.2 Access to God: Another result of reconciliation is access to God. We can now approach God with confidence, knowing that we are His children and that He hears our prayers. Hebrews 4:16

4.3 Assurance of Salvation: Finally, reconciliation gives us assurance of salvation. We can be confident that we are saved and have eternal life because of what Christ has done for us. 1 John 5:13
