Sermon on
The Process of Progressive Sanctification

1. Understanding Sanctification

1.1 Definition of Sanctification: Sanctification is the process by which God makes us more like Christ in all that we do, think, and desire. It is a lifelong process of being set apart for God's purposes. 1 Thessalonians 4:3

1.2 The Role of the Holy Spirit: The Holy Spirit is the agent of sanctification, working in us to cleanse us from sin and renew us in God's image. 2 Thessalonians 2:13

1.3 The Necessity of Sanctification: Sanctification is necessary for our growth in godliness and our preparation for heaven. It is an essential part of our salvation and our Christian walk. Hebrews 12:14

2. The Beginning of Sanctification

2.1 Justification: Sanctification begins at the moment of justification, when we are declared righteous in God's sight through faith in Jesus Christ. Romans 5:1

2.2 Regeneration: In regeneration, we are born again and made new creatures in Christ. This is the starting point of our sanctification. Titus 3:5

2.3 Union with Christ: Our sanctification is rooted in our union with Christ, who is our sanctification. As we are united with Him, we share in His death to sin and His resurrection to new life. 1 Corinthians 1:30

3. The Progress of Sanctification

3.1 Growth in Grace: Sanctification involves growth in grace, as we increasingly die to sin and live to righteousness. 2 Peter 3:18

3.2 Transformation of Character: Sanctification involves the transformation of our character, as we increasingly reflect the character of Christ. Romans 12:2

3.3 Fruit of the Spirit: The progress of sanctification is seen in the fruit of the Spirit, which is the evidence of God's work in us. Galatians 5:22-23

4. The Completion of Sanctification

4.1 Glorification: Sanctification is completed in glorification, when we are made perfectly holy and freed from the presence of sin. Romans 8:30

4.2 Resurrection: At the resurrection, our bodies will be transformed to be like Christ's glorious body, completing our sanctification. Philippians 3:21

4.3 Eternal Life: In eternal life, we will enjoy perfect fellowship with God, fully conformed to the image of Christ. This is the ultimate goal of sanctification. 1 John 3:2

5. The Role of the Believer in Sanctification

5.1 Faith: We must exercise faith in God's promises and power for sanctification. Galatians 2:20

5.2 Obedience: We must obey God's commands, which are the means of our sanctification. John 14:15

5.3 Perseverance: We must persevere in the faith, continuing in the process of sanctification until the end. Hebrews 12:1
