Understanding the Biblical Definition of Love

1. Love is God's Nature

1.1 God is Love: God's very nature and essence is love. This means that love originates from God because He is the source of love. 1 John 4:8

1.2 Love is a Characteristic of God: God's love is not just an emotion or feeling, but a characteristic of who He is. It is an integral part of His being. Psalm 136:26

1.3 God's Love is Unconditional: God's love is not based on our performance or worthiness. He loves us despite our sins and failures. Romans 5:8

2. Love is a Commandment

2.1 Love God: The greatest commandment in the Bible is to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. Matthew 22:37-38

2.2 Love Your Neighbor: The second greatest commandment is to love our neighbor as ourselves. This includes not only our friends and family, but also our enemies. Matthew 22:39

2.3 Love is a Fulfillment of the Law: All the commandments of the Bible are summed up in the commandment to love. When we love, we are fulfilling the law. Romans 13:10

3. Love is Self-Sacrificial

3.1 Love is Selfless: Biblical love is not self-seeking, but seeks the good of others. It is willing to sacrifice for the sake of others. 1 Corinthians 13:5

3.2 Love is Forgiving: Love is willing to forgive and does not keep a record of wrongs. It is patient and kind. 1 Corinthians 13:4-5

3.3 Love is the Greatest Virtue: Among faith, hope, and love, the greatest is love. It is the most excellent way. 1 Corinthians 13:13

4. Love is Demonstrated Through Actions

4.1 Love is Not Just Words, But Actions: Love is not just about saying "I love you", but demonstrating it through actions. 1 John 3:18

4.2 Love is Serving Others: Love is not about being served, but serving others. It is about putting the needs of others before our own. Galatians 5:13

4.3 Love is Being Patient and Kind: Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 1 Corinthians 13:4
