Sermon on
Understanding the Biblical Definition of Renewal

1. The Concept of Renewal in the Bible

1.1 The Biblical meaning of "Renewal": Renewal, in the biblical sense, refers to the process of being made new, fresh, or strong again. It's about spiritual transformation and growth. It's about leaving the old behind and embracing the new life in Christ. 2 Corinthians 5:17

1.2 The necessity of Renewal: The Bible emphasizes the necessity of renewal for spiritual growth and maturity. Without renewal, we remain stagnant and unproductive in our spiritual journey. Romans 12:2

2. The Process of Renewal

2.1 Repentance: The first step towards renewal is repentance. It involves acknowledging our sins, turning away from them, and turning towards God. Acts 3:19

2.2 Transformation: After repentance comes transformation. This is the process where our old self is replaced with a new self, created in the likeness of God. Ephesians 4:22-24

2.3 Growth: The final step in the process of renewal is growth. As we continue to live in obedience to God's word, we grow in our knowledge and understanding of Him, which leads to spiritual maturity. 2 Peter 3:18

3. The Results of Renewal

3.1 A New Life in Christ: When we experience renewal, we begin to live a new life in Christ. Our old self, with its sinful desires and habits, is gone, and a new self, created in the likeness of God, takes its place. 2 Corinthians 5:17

3.2 A Closer Relationship with God: Renewal brings us closer to God. As we are transformed and grow in our knowledge of Him, our relationship with Him deepens. James 4:8

3.3 A Fruitful Christian Life: Renewal leads to a fruitful Christian life. As we are renewed, we become more like Christ, and this is reflected in our actions and attitudes. We begin to bear the fruit of the Spirit, which includes love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Galatians 5:22-23

4. The Role of the Holy Spirit in Renewal

4.1 Conviction of Sin: The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in the process of renewal. He convicts us of our sin and leads us to repentance. John 16:8

4.2 Transformation and Growth: The Holy Spirit also plays a key role in our transformation and growth. He guides us into all truth and helps us to understand God's word. He also empowers us to live in obedience to God's word. (John 16 13; (Ephesians 3 16) Ephesians 3:16

4.3 Assurance of Salvation: The Holy Spirit assures us of our salvation. He bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God. This assurance gives us confidence and hope as we continue in our journey of renewal. Romans 8:16
