Sermon on
Understanding the Law

1. The Purpose of the Law

1.1 The Law as a Mirror: The law serves as a mirror that reflects our sinfulness and our need for a Savior. It reveals our shortcomings and our inability to attain righteousness on our own. Romans 3:20

1.2 The Law as a Guide: The law provides guidance on how to live a life pleasing to God. It outlines God's standards for righteous living. Psalm 119:105

1.3 The Law as a Guardian: Until Christ came, the law was our guardian. It protected us and guided us towards Christ. Galatians 3:24

2. The Fulfillment of the Law

2.1 Christ, the Fulfillment of the Law: Jesus did not come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it. Through Him, the righteousness of the law is fulfilled in us. Matthew 5:17

2.2 The Law of Christ: The law of Christ, which is love, fulfills the entire law. When we love others, we are fulfilling the law. Romans 13:8

3. The Freedom from the Law

3.1 Freedom through Christ: In Christ, we are set free from the law of sin and death. We are no longer under the condemnation of the law. Romans 8:1-2

3.2 Freedom to Serve in Love: We are called to use our freedom not as an opportunity for the flesh, but to serve one another in love. Galatians 5:13

4. The Law and Grace

4.1 Saved by Grace, not the Law: We are justified by God's grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, not by the works of the law. Romans 3:24

4.2 Living under Grace: Though we are not under the law but under grace, we are not to use this freedom as an excuse to sin. Romans 6:14-15

5. The Law and the Believer

5.1 The Law Written on our Hearts: As believers, God's law is written on our hearts. We delight in God's law and seek to live according to it. Jeremiah 31:33, Psalm 40:8

5.2 Walking by the Spirit: By walking by the Spirit, we will not gratify the desires of the flesh. The Spirit enables us to fulfill the righteous requirements of the law. Romans 8:4
